Like it or not, Lady GaGa is the biggest pop star in the world right now.
Proof? GaGa has just topped Forbes Celebrity 100 list, dethroning Oprah to be named the world’s most powerful celebrity. The list is compiled by measuring entertainment-related earnings and media visibility (print, TV, radio and online), as well as social networking power.
Other musicians in the top include: Justin Bieber at No. 3; U2 at No. 4; Elton John at No. 5; Taylor Swift at No. 7; and Bon Jovi at No. 8. Outside the top ten, Katy Perry came in at No. 12, Black Eyed Peas at No. 16, Beyonce at No. 29, and Jennifer Lopez at No. 50.
Now moving outside of Forbes and onto the Billboard charts, GaGa’s latest single “Edge of Glory” has rocketed in at No. 3 on the Hot 100. It’s a much better showing than her flop “Judas” (a flop by GaGa’s standards, that is) which peaked at No. 10. Team GaGa now seem to have moved on from “Judas”, and are now 0 Comments and 0 Reactions for “Edge of Glory”.
Meanwhile, the reviews for the freshly-leaked Born this Way album are in, and so far, so good. Popjustice predictably gave it a 9/10, while NME weren’t far behind with an 8/10. The Guardian have also been kind, awarding the album four out of five stars.
GaGa label Interscope are predicting big things for the album, and have orchestrated an all-out promotional assault that began with an appearance on American Idol and will continue all throughout release week. They’ve shipped a massive two million copies to retailers to cover themselves over the next fortnight. Official predictions aren’t in yet, but I think it’s unrealistic to expect GaGa to come close to Taylor Swift’s magic 1 million sales week — I’d say anywhere between 550-800k would be more likely.
What are your predictions for Born this Way?
